I live in California and I worked for ZeroChaos (until 2017) and Appen (until 2019). In response to Assembly Bill 5 (California Labor Laws), Appen ended my (and as far as I know everyone else's) contract in California at the end of 2019. I'm probably not the best person to explain AB5 but basically it said that we "couldn't" have a 1099 contract, we had to have a W2.
So in 2020 I stopped looking for WFH jobs. But now I would like to start to do something again. I LOVED working for Appen! Anybody here who lives in California? Has the situation changed or we're still unable to work? Are there companies that offer W2 contracts like ZeroChaos used to offer?
I'm quite busy with my regular job and with personal stuff at the moment so I can't work 4 or more hours a day, it must be something less frequent. Less frequent but constant would be ideal for me: for example, at Appen I worked on a translation project that lasted for more than 2 years and they sent me their tasks once a month! Something like this would be great to start again because I'm so busy at the moment. Any suggestions?
