For anyone interested, I was contacted by Appen and invited to take a test for their crowdsourcing position. This email came two days after I inquired about the position. I've heard conflicting reports about the pay, some say it pays so little it's not even worth it. Another contracted stated they made $270 in 14 hours by doing the right type of tasks (pay varies task to task). It sounds like you can work as much as you want... Depending on what happens in the near future I might jump on this opportunity just to see how it plays out. I feel like it could be a pretty good position if you learn how everything operates. At first I maybe making less then minimum wage but there is only one way to find out!

Hi thanks you for your information, I am working with zerochaos now, do you think I can work both with appen and ZC at the same time? I know the Social Media Evaluator (SME) gig at Appen is one of the few other ratings types of jobs ZC will let you work while employed as an AQR. IMO, well worth checking with ZC first before taking that, or any other sort of ratings, job. You don't want to give them an excuse to fire you!

I currently work for them rating the ads that I see on my own Facebook page (based on how much/why I do/don't want to see them on my page). It is one hour a day (approximately), and after you finish that you have to wait at least one hour, then come back and do what they call a "bakeoff" comparing pairs of ads (which takes about 2 minutes). So it is pretty easy. You have to do a minimum of 5 days a week but you can do all 7 days if you want. It pays $13.75 an hour, paid at the end of the month.
I used to do their social medial evaluator job, which as others have said was 4 hours a day and a bit restrictive with the hours. I ended the contract due to getting a full time job and the time constraints on the social media job weren't something I could do with a full time job and the kids (but long story short I ended up getting let go from my new job a few weeks later because soon after I was hired I ended up needing to take off almost a week and a half due to my son getting very ill and being in the hospital and my father in law passing away in another state, and apparently they weren't very sympathetic to my situation!) After getting let go from that job I contacted Appen to see if I could resume the social media job and they said no, but they offered me the 1 hour ads job. Been doing it since June.
I also remember asking if I could refer someone to the 1 hour job and they told me to have them apply for the Social Media Evaluator job on the website and type in the application that they were referred by me. So I think the 1 our job gets lumped in with the Social Media Eval position.
I have to say I like the 1 hour one. It can be repetitive but it is quick and they offer constant feedback, webinars for asking questions, a website for questions, etc. I've been working with them for 2 years now.

I am so glad you described your experiences! I was just asked if I want the Appen SME position, the 4 hour per day one. I was desperate and applied everywhere when things were uber slow at ZC, now I am pretty sure I should hold off, at least until my ZC contract ends. It is nice to have opportunities lined up, I just don't want to get in over my head considering I work full time already, it would be do-able when I finish ZC but if I try to do both it will be WAY to much and your post made this very obvious to me. Thanks so much Dani! I loved reading this, and it sounds so nice to have this kind of consistent work even if it is just an hour per day.

Hello everyone,
I have a question, I am working for ZC. Can I work for Appen as Social Medial Evaluator? I don't want to loose ZC but right now we have no tasks. so I am trying to figure it out what can I do.

I know at least one who asked ZC if that was OK and was told there is no conflict. You may want to send in an email to ZC to ask, just to cover your butt. Should not be any prob.

Is anyone starting the SME project that begins today? I'm debating between starting today or tomorrow because today is kind of busy for me...

I wish I could get approved for the SME position. I have applied 3 times, all to get denied... oh well. I recently applied to measurement inc and ETS and heard back from both of them so hopefully those go well.

As long as you have enough social media friends/followers, I thought it was a go? It is not an easy job as far as the scheduling goes, I have to admit. This is my second SME project with Appen. They transitioned me to this one after being on a different one for almost a year.

I got an email to take the 3 part test for search engine evaluate today. I started the test and the website is taking forever to load each question. Is this normal for the site or am I doing something wrong. Thanks for any help.

Thank you Alison. Sending good thought for you to get hired. It is hard waiting to hear back with results. I am not good at waiting.
