So as of an hour ago I have officially been accepted into the Mturk program! It took me 3 days to hear back and I am so glad to finally have some online work again until I hear back from the big guns, namely Lionbridge, Appen and Raterlabs. Before I begin working at Mturk I really wanted to first reach out to you all and let you know it's out there, and secondly I wanted to start a thread that offers some insight on Mturk since we don't currently have one. I have to be honest folks, I'm clueless as a newbie and I want to start off on the right foot! If any Mturk vets out there have any insights or advice I would love to hear it. Also, I have come across multiple boards that suggest programs to use with Mturk. Are there any "must have" programs a beginner should use? Thank you all for your contributions I look forward to keeping you updated on my WFH journey as I also look forward to reading about yours!

It's been awhile since I did anything on Mturk, but I do remember a couple of things without looking them up. Many of the HITS are restricted to people who have already completed a certain number. So in order to access those, spend some time doing HITS that may not pay well but that can be completed quickly to get your numbers up. Also, many HITs require that you take a qualifying test, which is usually very short. So at first, don't only search for HITS that you are qualified for. Search for HITS that interest you, and take the qualifying tests.

In addition, sharing Great Hits with each other helped me a lot of times when I dedicated many hours on MTurk. I use to be on numerous forums such as mturkforum.com/forumdisplay.php?30-Great-HITs and participated and found Great Hits. Maybe a Great Hits Thread should be added under the Amazon Mechanical Turk.

That's a really good idea I've been doing some research and have discovered the quailty of Hits are vital to making money. It seems like there is a learning period at Mturk that you need to go through first as tombrater mentioned before you get into a rhythm and get better Hits available to you. It's certainly interesting to me and really a decent way to make a few bucks here and there while relaxing on the couch. I'm going to start this weekend while I wait for other responses. This would be great work during times of low task availability elsewhere, especially if you come across great Hits!

I belong to a group on Facebook that's a pretty big help. Turkers United www.facebook.com/groups/1088842447862251/I've looked at other groups on there and hate the feel of them, but this one doesn't list a bunch of BS and it's all legitimate hit stuff.

There are requesters you absolutely don't want to do hits for, and there are some that are awesome! There are scripts to run, so you can see the reviews on them. The Facebook group I posted has some great info in their files that give more detailed info, but to start, you definitely want to get Turkopticon. This is the script that shows you the requester reputation.

I've had an account with Mturk forever, but have never completed any HITs....doesn't seem to be worth it. How do you make any money there? Any tips?

One quick tip: When you log in, click 'Hits I am qualified for", and after you get to the next screen on the upper left, change the drop down menu to "Reward Amount Most First" so the bigger payouts show up for you to work. Make sure you complete your profile and as previously said, the more you work, the more you get.

Does anyone know if there is a conflict of interest with companies like lionbridge or appen if you apply to mturk. This is an important question as mturk provides search quality evaluation and I can't find any information about it anywhere

The clients are different so there should not be a conflict. But many applicants seem to choose not to disclose other vendor's name(s) on the application.

Is MTurk a good gig? How many hours a week do you get and how much money? Is it entry level? How difficult is it to get hired?

Is MTurk a good gig? How many hours a week do you get and how much money? Is it entry level? How difficult is it to get hired? MTurk isn't really a gig. You sign up to do Human Intelligence Tasks (HITS) and get paid by the task. The money depends on which ones you get and how many of them you do. I don't know how hard it is to sign up now. I did it years ago and it was easy for me then.
