You can search for a job here as a personal care or respite worker if you live in or within driving distance of the following states: Arizona, Connecticut, Kansas, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, or Vermont. You would work with disabled people of any age (including children) or elders. Most of the time you would be either in the client's home or in the community, but the parent or guardian might let you take care of the client in your own home.
The pay rate varies from state to state. In Kansas, where I live, you would start at $9.42/hour to work with someone who has an intellectual or developmental disability. However, the parents here in Johnson County at least will give you money for gas if you transport their child, and money for meals if you will be in charge of your client out in the community at mealtime. Also, our legislature just overrode the governor's veto of the budget bill, so the hourly wage might go up in the near future.
