Hello!
Does anyone work for ETS's TOEFL Speaking Rater program? I was invited to that project because I work for the SAT program but I was wondering what it is like or what is it about? Is it seasonal like most programs (i.e. scoring in spring?) or more year round like SAT? Thanks!

TOEFL Speaking is considered year-round and it is one of the easiest projects you will work on. You listen to people speak and rate them according to the rubric. It really is fun to listen, instead of read all the time/=.

When you say year round, is it like the SAT where it is mostly October-June or is it January-December? Thanks for responding.

Is this a position where you can work at whatever time you work for as long as you want (similar to the search engine rater positions with ZeroChaos, LeapForce, and the like) and can anyone do this regardless of their work history? Or are there set times and per-day hours you must commit to and you have to have some sort of teaching background? I checked out the ETS site and they hint at the latter, but they are very vague about it. They say "sessions are between 8:30 AM and 9 PM" on their online rater FAQ, and they say to send in a resume "highlighting your prior teaching experience", but they don't say what they mean by "sessions" and they don't give any actual experience/education requirements.
Also, is this a W2 employee position or an independent contractor position, and how much does it pay?
Sorry to bombard you guys with questions, but this sounds like some pretty interesting work. Especially with the search engine evaluation companies all seemingly being on a hiring freeze.

Especially with the search engine evaluation companies all seemingly being on a hiring freeze. All of the ETS jobs are W2 positions and the pay ranges depending on which assignment you are working on. I've seen some projects start at $13/hour while others are upwards of $20/hour. This specific project is similar to the SAT one and pays $15/hour. Also, the ETS jobs that I have worked on you usually submit your availability and hours are based on specific times of the day. So you cannot work whenever you want. Your shifts that you submit have to be approved because there is a leader that oversees your work and you cannot work without a leader present during your shift. For the TOEFL project, I'm not sure what sort of experience you need but probably a bachelor's degree. I was only invited to this project because I rate for SAT, which requires a bachelors (in any field). I have not started working yet, as I just completed training so that is pretty much all of the information I can give at this time.

Today's Nov. 2nd, 2017 & I was just invited to try out for the TOEFL & am given the choice or speaking OR writing. I guess I'll try speaking since that's no reading for a change! I'd do both really though!
How's it going for those doing it these days?

Hello,
How do you apply for the TOEFEL project? I can't find any jobs on their webpage where we can work from home.
Thank you

Hello, How do you apply for the TOEFEL project? I can't find any jobs on their webpage where we can work from home. Thank you I don't think you can apply for it. It almost seems like you have to get invited to it. My husband began working on it after the SAT program scoring ended. However, he was invited to it.

Has anyone taken the toefl training? Wondering if anyone has been scheduled for a mentoring shift yet? I did my training on 11/28 & they said we should hear back from them w/i 7 days & if not, to contact them. I did exactly that & got a reply on 12/8 (yesterday) only stating that they'll be sending out an email requesting availability once they're ready to begin the mentor shifts. OK, that's not saying much. BTW, do you or anyone know if we had to have done a pretty good job (as in a certain score on the sets) on the training to move forward OR as long as we complete it, they'll give anyone who completed it a chance to work?

I would hope that the training set scores wouldn't matter as it is training. BTW I got the same email on Dec 8.

There is no certain score you need to get in order to move forth as a rater, which is nice. Your mentor shift is a shift where you get lots of feedback and guidance before you start in production. I think you'll like TOEFL. It's one of my favorite ETS jobs and pretty laid back. You'll also get plenty of feedback being a new rater in general.

Thanks! Has everyone done the training by now? There was the one I did on 11/28 & then another I did a month later on 12/29. It seems we now just wait to be told when to schedule ourselves for January.

You probably won't be able to submit your availability until January to begin scoring in February. We had to submit our January availability at the beginning of December and shifts were confirmed 2 weeks ago. You submit your availability at the beginning of the month to determine the shifts that you will be working that next month.

^^ Yes, on 12/29 I submitted up to 1/7 for availability, which is the latest I could submit for availability. They seem pretty disorganized so far. I've had to email them about that 12/29 training because the 2 dates I had given came & passed for when I wanted to do that 2nd training. When I emailed them, then they said I could do the follow day, which was 12/29 at the time, so I'm glad I was available to do it.
Nothing's been confirmed for Jan yet, I see. Pretty soon, I'll be emailing them asking about January.
